Proper use of aftercare and tattoo maintenance is just as important as the initial application of the tattoo.
What follows is the general aftercare and aftercare with Saniderm instructions. Please follow them. These will help ensure your tattoo heals out properly.
GENERAL AFTERCARE
Clean the tattoo with your fingertips and liquid antibacterial soap. Don’t use bar soaps, body washes, washcloths, or anything abrasive while the tattoo heals. Clean the tattoo 2-5 times per day.
After cleaning, pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Let air dry for a few minutes, then apply a THIN layer of aloe-free, fragrance-free moisturizer. (Aquaphor, Aveeno, Curel, Eucerin, etc.). Blot away any excess moisturizer with a clean paper towel after a few minutes. That tattoo should not look wet, just slightly shinier than the surrounding skin.
Do NOT:
-Soak the tattoo in standing bodies of water for two weeks
-Expose the tattoo to sun, dirt, sand, pet dander, perfumes or other chemicals for two weeks
-Pick at any flaking skin or scabbing areas (Wash or moisturize to remove loose flakes and smooth down any others)
-Scratch if it itches (wash or moisturize to relieve itching)
All aftercare should be continued for 2 weeks. Continue to apply lotion twice a day for a further 2 weeks.
Once the tattoo is completely healed (4 weeks after application) apply strong sunscreen to the tattoo whenever it is exposed to the sun. The sun breaks down all ink, even black. You can keep your tattoo looking fresh by moisturizing the area daily and keeping any hair growth trimmed or shaved back.
AFTERCARE WITH SANIDERM
-
The application of Saniderm should be left in place for 8-24 hours.
-
To remove:Gently pull the Saniderm back over itself in the direction of your hair growth. If the Saniderm is being stubborn you may scrub the area between the skin and already removed Saniderm with liquid antibacterial soap to help loosen.
-
Avoid pulling directly upward on the Saniderm. Avoid pulling the Saniderm too hard or too quickly. Slow and steady is the best.
-
Once the Saniderm is removed, clean the tattoo with liquid antibacterial soap and your fingers. Rub the soap into the tattoo until the tattoo no longer feels slimy. Rinse with warm water, not hot.
-
After rinsing, pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel.
-
Allow the tattoo to air dry for few minutes.
-
If desired a second application of Saniderm (Tegaderm) can be applied. Make sure the tattoo is clean and dry before applying a second sheet of Saniderm.
-
The second application of
Saniderm can be left in place for up to 5 days. -
Once Saniderm is removed for good, continue healing with general aftercare for the remainder of a 2-week period from tattoo application.
